Dick Gregg 1933-2024

It’s with sadness that we note the passing of Brother Dick Gregg, a very active member of Council 11369 for several years.

Dick died February 12th at his home.

He is pictured above on the right.

He is pictured above, second from the right, at the dedication of the council’s Right to Life Billboard along I-680 and behind St Luke Parish in 2010.

Sadly, five of the eight men pictured including then-Bishop of Youngstown George Murry are no longer with us.

We know they are all with the Lord in heaven.

DICK GREGG’S STORY WITH THE KNIGHTS

Dick joined the Knights in 2004, becoming active immediately.

Above, Dick is speaking with Congressman Tim Ryan at one of our summer picnics at St Paul Monastery.

At that time, Ryan was a member of the Democrats for Life organization.

My apologies for the quality of some pictures, taken from printed monthly newsletters that predated the website.

I’m so thankful for Dick’s council work at bingo nights, spaghetti dinners, pancake breakfasts, raffle ticket sales and of course our annual Thanksgiving and Christmas food drives.

He lived his faith, speaking with real conviction on life issues.

He even traveled with the late Brother Paschal to Washington DC for several of the annual March for Life events that Brother Paschal attended faithfully for so many years.

There will be a Calling Hours for Dick at the Lane Funeral Home Canfield chapel Tuesday February 27 from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m.

A memorial service follows there at 11 a.m.

K of C Joins Men’s Club to Support YFF Epiphany Breakfast

Eight Council 11369 members (plus one K of C daughter, thanks Lily) served up pancakes, sausage, coffee, juice and milk for about 250 children and parents in the St Michael Youth Faith Formation classes on Sunday, January 7.

The Epiphany Breakfast was a return from Christmas break for the students and a great way to combine the K of C and St Michael’s Men’s Club in a cooperative effort.

And we were busy! Kids and adults alike were chowing down and drinking plenty of refreshments!

Great thanks goes to Brother Mark Curtis for getting us all together and organizing the event.

Here’s hoping we’re back again next year!

25 Enjoy Christmas Dinner, Song

About 10 Knights and their wives got together for Christmas dinner on January 3rd at A La Cart Catering in Canfield.

Brothers Ed, Marco and John from the Pauline community in Ellsworth Township also joined us.

So did Msgr Robert Siffrin, representing Bishop David Bonnar.

So wonderful to have him with us.

All the clergy are, of course, Knights members.

We feasted on chicken, fish, beef, potatoes and salad.

Some terrific desserts too!

As seen in the above picture, we also sand Christmas carols.

Always a great evet!

See you there, fellow Knights!

Pancake Breakfast for East Palestine

A successful Pancake Breakfast to benefit the residents of East Palestine on November 24 at the St Michael Church Hall.

Here’s a recap from our Worthy Grand Knight:

Thanks to all who helped today with our pancake breakfast, and special thanks to Lily Susak , Elsa Buehler and Christopher Skrobola for their help also.

Thanks to Brother Dan Coulter for getting the ball rolling, and thanks to Brother Mark Curtis for putting everything together.

Thanks to you, Brother Dan took $572 in cash and numerous groceries, cleaning supplies and packages of bottled water to the Knights council at Our Lay of Lourdes Church in East Palestine.

Today’s benefit was the sort of thing that we need to do.

Stay tuned for another benefit that may be in the works.

Thank you all!  Vivat Jesus!

Council Saddened with Death of Bro. Joshua

The following is the obituary written for Brother Joshua:

Brother Joshua Tim Seidl, S.S.P., passed away on Sunday September 3, 2023, at the local community of Society of St. Paul Monastery in Canfield, Oh.

Brother Joshua was born in Highland Park, Michigan (United States) on March 25, 1951, one of three children (a brother and a sister), to parents Charles D. Seidl and Elayne V. Seidl. He entered the community of Staten Island (USA) on September 20, 1996, began his Novitiate on August 15,1997, made his First Religious Profession on August 16, 1998, assuming the name of Joshua. He consecrated himself definitively with his Perpetual Profession on August 14, 2003.

Prior to joining the congregation, Brother Joshua served in the United States Air Force in Turkey and Europe. He also worked for the Metro Bus Company of Detroit, Michigan, USA. Upon entering the Congregation, he dedicated himself to various apostolic activities: bookstore, parish exhibitions, the marketing department of St. Paul’s Publishing and, more recently, Director of the shipping department for the publishing house. He also served as Vocations Director and Local Superior of the Staten Island, New York Community.

Brother Joshua was very proud of his native American heritage; he was in fact a member of the Ojibwe tribe. He liked its history, its customs, the science and wisdom of its people, its values. He also witnessed this with his dressing and wearing his hair long, as is customary in native American culture. He was happy with the fact that our Constitutions, among many other things, also mention work with indigenous cultures: “In those countries where circumstances require it, our activity will also promote indigenous culture” (Constitutions and Directory, 72.1).

He was also a writer on native American fiction in his two self-published books, Hawk Dancer, and Cloudburst. He loved to garden, planted herbs and flowers in the communities where he happened to live and occasionally baked bread and cooked some specialties.

Brother Joshua had a sincere love of truth, made sacred use of time, lived honesty even in small things, lived a sincere life, and generous service.

May the Lord welcome this brother of ours, who had recently celebrated his 25th Religious Profession, and grant him an eternal reward, while we ask him to intercede for numerous and holy vocations of brother Disciples in our Congregation.

Rome, 4 September 2023 Father Vito Spagnolo, SSP.

The Superiors of Circumscriptions are to inform their communities of the prescribed suffrages.

(Const. 65 and 65.1).

A Mass of Christina Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday September 12, 2023, at the Monastery, followed by the interment at the Society of St. Paul Cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Edward J. Fox & Sons Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. Boardman.

St Paul, 11369 Brothers Join for Anniversary Event

Several Council 11369 brothers joined the priests and brothers of the St Paul Monastery as well as the Friends of St Paul in celebrating the recent 25th anniversary of the religious profession of Brother Joshua Seidl.

Here is Brother Marco’s account of the event from the St Paul website:

(Click here for the full story)

Tuesday, August 15, Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was a day of celebration for the Canfield (Ohio) religious community.

During the Holy Mass presided over by Father Matthew Roehrig, provincial councilor, of the new province of Mexico-Cuba-USA, the 25th anniversary of the religious profession (1998-2023) of Brother Joshua Seidl, was celebrated.

Particularly felt during the Holy Mass was the moment of the renewal of vows in front of the altar.

All together we recited: “I offer myself to this Society with all my heart, so that with the grace of the Holy Spirit, and though the intercession of blessed Mary, Queen of Apostles, and of St. Paul the Apostle, I may attain perfect charity in the service of God and the Church. Amen”.

After the celebration, in the community refectory, the volunteers of the “Friends of St. Paul” group who have long represented support for the confreres and their apostolate set up a moment of celebration with decorations and refreshments.

A moment of joy, hope, and encouragement for the new challenges that await our beloved Province.

About 60 attendees enjoyed a Cookout lunch inside.

Another five Knights helped with cooking and other tasks as needed.
